Colossal caves tucson9/9/2023 While searching for stray cows on the vast ranch, he accidentally came upon its narrow opening. Officially, Colossal Cave was discovered by Soloman Lick in 1879. There are even “candlelight tours” where each visitor is given a lighted candle to experience the cave as the Hohokam did over a thousand years ago without electric-powered lights. Visitors can choose from ongoing daily “generic tours” or can arrange more adventurous tours through darkened more narrow passages requiring hardhats and good physical fitness. Although there are an estimated 39 miles of cave tunnels, it took over two years to map just two miles of passageway where tours penetrate six stories deep into the cave. Interestingly, although outside summer temperatures can become quite high in the desert area, the temperature inside Colossal Cave is always a cool 70 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.Ĭolossal Cave has never been fully explored. As arid conditions evolved, Colossal Cave became totally dry, stopping the growth of new formations. The stalactites, stalagmites and majestic columns were created by slow-seeping ground water through the limestone ceilings. Today the cave and ranch are united as Colossal Cave Mountain Park, a historical destination and educational outreach for school children.Ī tour through Colossal Cave is by itself an attention-grabbing experience where natural formations were formed over millions of years. The peaceful Indians farmed the valley below the cave, which about a thousand years later became known as La Posta Quemada Ranch. I would think that especially at the end of this pandemic that any attraction would be doing all they can to draw in customers and make sure they are treating them fairly and with respect.Artifacts confirm that Colossal Cave was used as shelter by the ancient Hohokam Indians from about 900 through 1450 AD. This was a extremely bad experience, I haven’t encountered anyone on our entire vacation that was as rude or intent on not accommodating customers as the people working today at colossal caves. Sadly this is our last day in tuscon and we decided to leave as it was clear the staff didn’t have any intent on serving us as customers. She said it would take too long to process and move up our tickets. The 10am tour left with 9 spots available and even as they were leaving we asked again if we could go and the lady at the cash register said no. The lady at the cash register told her no and that she wouldn’t do it. Another lady who was the tour guide asked if we could be added to the group and/or go on the 10:30 tour. We asked if we could be added to the group since 9 people hadn’t showed up and they said no. There were 9 empty spots out of twenty in the 10 am tour group. The tour at 10am was about to leave and they had said it was sold out. The lady at the cash register along with the gentleman were incredibly rude and acted like bullies toward us. He then told me that it wasn’t his choice to be in the Tuscon passport and he wished they were never in it. When I told them it wasn’t on their website, a gentleman who was in the office told me that there is way too much to put in their website and they couldn’t possibly do that. This is not stated on their website or the Tuscon passport site. They told us that we were supposed to purchase tickets online and then come in with the coupon and get a refund. We also tried to call and was told today that their phone have been down for three days. Yesterday we tried to order tickets online for the 10am cave tour, but there was no way to redeem our passport discount. We purchased the Tuscon passport for the local attractions. We are visiting from Maryland and had planned on visiting Colossal Caves.
